Check back soon!
Survived a busy spring semester with 10 units at two junior/community colleges (JC)…barely. Quite a bit of work in 5 sewing classes from Jan to May. My sewing supplies took over a larger portion than usual of the house. Learned so many tips and tricks, new techniques. Challenged myself working with knits in three classes. Had fun learning to fit garments, though ended up making technique pieces due to time constraints. But I have the adjusted patterns and fabric to make garments to fit this summer or whenever I feel so inclined.
After a bit of rest need to start preparing for a busy summer. Only taking one JC class, but will back to teaching machine instruction and a few creative classes on making bags and basic sewing skills. Need to make additional samples to photograph and edit the tutorials. Pre-COVID samples could be passed around class, so thinking ways to present the information in way that respects personal space.
Someday I’ll get photos of recent projects…the infamous someday…..
Whelp! It was late January when I wrote a hopeful post about regular updates to the site, so the “New Year’s Resolution” optimism isn’t to blame; and, because of COVID lock-downs, most of us were fairly realistic about making resolutions that weren’t realistic. Hard to go to the gym 3 days a week when the indoor area is closed and very few have space for outside classes. But, it seemed so easy to post updates on classes and progress made or lessons learned from mistakes once a week or so. Boy, was I wrong!!!
Classes started slow and I had the intention to work ahead while I could, but, all the info to do so wasn’t available yet. So, I had to follow along at the rate the class was designed for…which now means I’m in crunch time and jumping from deadline to deadline. Ack!
That being said, I’ll post when I can, but it won’t be often. Guess It’s a good thing I don’t have an email list expecting regular content. 😉
Eventually, I’ll get photos and a few tutorials from past classes posted. Please be patient…very patient.
But, now, to finish the homework due today and then continue on the assignment due in 4 days, while not forgetting the assignments due in 7 and 11 days, etc….AND…start calendaring classes for the summer session. Still cogitating on whether I want to offer any project classes for the summer session or just stick with machine instruction…and that deadline is 13 days away. Double Ack!!
Now I’m back to sewing fiddly knits! See you later…
Welcome to 2021! May this year be a better year for everyone!
Since the pandemic has many things closed and we are sheltering in place as much as possible I’ve taken this time to do a deeper dive on increasing and refining my skills. Thanks to all classes being online I am to take fashion studies courses with intuitions and instructors I never would have had the chance to in 2018. Again, thanks to my local American Sewing Guild (ASG) chapter for mentioning programs at schools I was previously unaware of.
This has renewed a commitment to maintain this website and start a blog chronicling my trials and tribulations of being an online student at three community colleges focusing on Fashion Studies. This has been a silver lining of the “lock-down” caused by Coronavirus – taking Fashion Studies classes online! My work schedule has not allowed for in-person classes and I could not learn from amazing instructors at my local college. Now that all courses are on-line I have been able to take the classes that meet my interests and will improve my skills. As a self-taught sewer, the opportunities for formal education were few. I relish the opportunity to learn the current “right way” to do things. And, I continue to remain grateful to the experts who provided tips and tricks along the way.
Come back for some free tutorials some of the projects from previous classes I taught in 2018-2020 get posted. I will be editing and posting them as time allows this semester.
Due to COVID-19 all in-person classes are postponed.
Stay safe, wear a mask and wash your hands!
I look forward to when classes can return to the store.
As of August 8th, 2020 classes will resume in the store. Please check the email for the new classroom requirements. Class size is limited to 5 students. The tables are placed at least 6 feet apart. Masks must be worn at all times, No food or drink allowed, sanitize your hands and machine before entering the classroom.
Machine instruction classes are continuing on a monthly basis. The remaining Beginning Sewing classes have been rescheduled, but are not listed on the store calendar. If you are unable to make these dates, a credit will be issued as a store gift card.
Effective immediately, all classes are postponed until further notice.
The remaining beginning sewing classes will be rescheduled when it is safe to do so. Machine instruction classes will be rescheduled on a monthly basis when the store and classroom are open again.
Be smart: Wear a mask, wash your hands so we can all stay safe!
Too busy sewing and teaching classes to update the site, please check back in May.
